Bukola Shonibare discussed the abduction of the Chibok Girls with Global Rights. It has been ten years since the incident, and unfortunately, 91 out of the 276 girls are still unaccounted for. It is believed that some of them are still in captivity or have died. The ones who managed to escape captivity and return home are still affected by deep traumas and often face discrimination and rejection.

To give context, on the night of April 14-15, 2014, Boko Haram, a terrorist group in Nigeria, kidnapped 276 female students aged 16 -18 from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, Nigeria. The school had been closed for four weeks due to security concerns, but the girls had reconvened to take their final school leaving exams in physics, intending to return to their homes immediately afterwards.

The kidnapping and the government’s lack of action towards their safety caused local and international outrage, leading to the Bring Back Our Girls campaign.
