Website Global Rights

Global Rights is an international human rights capacity-building non-governmental organization (NGO). Global Rights was founded in Washington DC, USA in 1978 with the name International Human Rights Law Group and changed its name to Global Rights: Partners for Justice in 2003 at its 25th anniversary. Global Rights works with local activists in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to promote and protect the rights of marginalized populations. We provide technical assistance and training to enable local partners document and expose human rights abuses, conduct community outreach and mobilization, advocate for legal and policy reform, and provide legal and paralegal services.

Background

At the crux of an open and democratic society is a consciousness of the duty to respect and promote the right of every person, without discrimination, to associate, express views and opinions about, and participate in decision-making that impacts their lives and society. The manifestation of this civic participation is multifaceted and includes political, community, civic skills, and social justice forms of engagement. Where these are missing in a society, then the quality of its democracy is questionable.

The exclusion of some segments of society from citizen squares in which these forms of engagement take place means that the discourse within those circles is not truly representative of the aspirations of the collective and, therefore, stagnates the growth of the society. In Nigeria, apart from the traditionally excluded groups, several other identity intersections remain invisible and excluded from the civic space, ostracized both by the government and civic actors, such as IDPs. The International Organization for Migration estimates that there were over 2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria as of 2023. This number has continued to grow as Nigeria’s insecurity is metastasizing. This group of citizens have remained invisible and disconnected from civic movements – even those that claim to advocate for them and their issues. Internally displaced persons across Nigeria often live in deplorable conditions and remain vulnerable to insecurity and human rights violations. Most are disenfranchised from voting in elections or participating in civic discourses, and they often encounter obstacles that impede their abilities to access constitutionally guaranteed rights and have a voice in the political, economic, and social decisions that affect their lives.

Storytelling from the perspective of marginalized communities is important in reshaping the narratives that influence public policy and societal attitudes. It ensures that the experiences and aspirations of those often left out of decision-making processes are heard, acknowledged, and acted upon, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society.

Global Rights aims to bridge this gap by building the capacity of IDPs in Abuja, on digital literacy, particularly in using mobile phones for storytelling. Global Rights will engage a consultant to train IDPs on how to take and share pictures, record videos, and post their stories online, to amplify their voices in the civic space.
