Enhancing Human Rights Education for Illiterate and Semi-literate Women Global Rights implements a comprehensive program of human and legal rights education for illiterate and semi-literate women in diverse urban and rural areas across Morocco. The program is designed to increase women’s knowledge and awareness of their rights under national and international laws, and develop their individual and collective capacities to defend their rights and mobilize for change. In partnership with 31 women’s rights NGOs and local development associations, Global Rights created a 420-page Arabic language facilitator’s manual “Making Human Rights Real: A Human and Legal Rights Education program for women in Morocco” and trained hundreds of local NGO members as facilitators for the program, which has reached thousands of women across the country.
Reinforcing the Capacity of NGOs in Underserved Regions Global Rights implements partnerships with women’s rights NGOs in traditionally underserved regions in which we train and mentor community liaisons. Our community liaisons are young women activists who work full-time within their NGOs to promote women’s rights in their respective communities and to develop the institutional capacities of their organization. This component of our work aims to increase the participation of young women in the human rights movement. We train our liaisons in: the monitoring of women’s rights issues; interactions with local administrative and judicial authorities; grassroots level outreach; networking and coalition building; management and fundraising; legal orientation; and advocacy. Currently we work with NGO partners in Marrakech/Tansift al Haouz, Agadir/Souss Massa Draa, El Hajeb (Middle Atlas) and the Northwest (Tangiers-Tetouan).
Increasing Access to Information
-
To facilitate the access by Moroccan activists and researchers to the most recent information on human rights nationally and internationally, we operate a Resource Center on Women’s Human Rights at our Rabat office. The Center has a library with more than 1,400 multi-media multi-lingual resources, a reading room, conference space and a video room. -
We compile and distribute a weekly electronic newsletter in French on women’s rights news nationally and internationally, entitled “Wired for Women’s Rights in the Maghreb.” -
We train members of local NGOs in the strategic use of the Internet in women’s rights advocacy through a participatory and interactive hands-on training workshop.
