Thierry Kambere
a human rights activist from Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
WHEN: Monday, April 3, 2006 12:00-2:00pm
WHERE: Global Rights 1200 18th Street, NW Suite 602 Washington, DC Metro Stops: Farragut North or Dupont Circle
WHO: A human rights activist from Goma, DRC, Thierry joined Global Rights' DRC team in November 2005 as the justice and combating impunity program officer. Co-author of Global Rights' recent assessment of the national justice sector in DRC entitled "SOS Justice," Thierry recently returned from a lengthy trip in nine Congolese provinces where he facilitated local justice stakeholder forums, which brought together human rights NGOs, legal practitioners, judicial personnel and support staff as well as many other key actors in the justice sector.
WHAT: The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) sent a strong message against impunity last week when it made its first ever arrest of Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, alleged founder and leader of the Union des Patriotes Congolais. Lubanga was transferred to the ICC, where he will face charges for war crimes for war crimes. While these prosecutions will send an important message, unfortunately, the ICC will only be able to try a handful of perpetrators. And Congolese courts have done little to combat impunity.
Come hear Thierry speak about prospects for national and international justice in Congo in light of the country’s history of impunity, its prevailing context, and the perceptions of justice by Congolese people. He will also help us explore what role, if any, justice can play in helping Congolese people achieve reconciliation.
Presentation will be in French and English
A light lunch will be available
SPACE IS LIMITED PLEASE RSVP by Thursday, March 30, 2006 to AmyF@globalrights.org, or call (202) 822-4600 x 137
